BOB MCMILLAN, ORNITHOLOGIST AND AUTHOR OF SKYE BIRDS

This was a very informative talk at the Ceilidh House by local expert Bob McMillan, where he showed photos of some of the area's rarer visitors, and discussed some of the environmental challenges our birdlife faces, including wind farms and avian flu.

Birds in Skye & Lochalsh Areas:
A total of 238 species have been recorded in Skye and Lochalsh, with 14 being 'red listed' as of high conservation concern. There are about 30 pairs of Golden Eagles in the area.

Some unusual species include the Yellow-Breasted Bunting, Pallas's Warbler, and a Red-Footed Falcon - one of our rarest visitors to the area is the Hoopoe.

Seagulls in our area include the Herring Gull, the Glaucous Gull, the Black-Headed Gull & Iceland Gulls. Some of the rarer visitors include Franklin's, Bonaparte's Gulls, and the Mediterranean Gull.

One of the main migration paths crosses the southern end of the Sound of Sleat across the Kinloch Gap to Broadford bay.
